Why doing more of what works stops working

Why your best year can leave you more stuck than ever, and how to step up to the next level instead of climbing the same ladder.

Here's what I hear every week: I had my best year ever, and I feel more stuck than I have ever been.

That's the success trap. You keep doing more of what works until it stops working.

Nobody tells you this part. Progress inside one level feels like progress overall, and it isn't. You get faster, you get better, you charge a little more. But you're climbing the same ladder you've always climbed, and the top of that ladder is a ceiling.

You know you're in the trap when a few things show up together. Your calendar is full, but your work feels smaller. Every new client looks like the last one. You keep adding tactics: a new offer, a new funnel, a new app. And the thought of doing this for ten more years makes you tired.

This is why most people stall. They feel the gap, and they answer it with strategy: a new plan, a new system. But the gap isn't a strategy problem. You've outgrown the old level and you haven't stepped into the next one. That's a change of identity, and it comes first. Identity, then strategy, then systems.

There are four levels. At the bottom is craft: getting good at the work. Then career: getting paid well for it. Then leverage, where your work multiplies without more of your hours. And then legacy, where it outlives you.

Most successful people are stuck between career and leverage, and the jump between those two is what this is about.

The threshold between them is uncomfortable on purpose. On one side, you're the expert who does the work. On the other, you're the person who designs how the work gets done. You can't carry the old identity across. Something has to be let go.

So here are four moves to leverage:

  1. Name the level you're on, honestly.
  2. Decide who you're becoming, in a sentence.
  3. Build one asset that works without you: a product, a method, a body of work.
  4. Protect the hours that build it before the hours that sell it.

Becoming is the work. It isn't more effort at the old level. It's a new way of seeing yourself, with a strategy and a system that follow from it.

So here's your next step. Open the worksheet below. Write down the level you're on, the person you're becoming, and the one asset you'll build first. Then do the first hour of it this week. That's how you get out of the trap.
